Audit files & MTD files now attached automatically

Feature Overview

For QuickBooks users, audit files and Making Tax Digital (MTD) daily summary files are now automatically attached to the relevant journal entries and invoices created by Link My Books.

This brings QuickBooks in line with the existing Xero behaviour, so you can keep your compliance documentation together inside your accounting platform instead of downloading it separately from Link My Books.

How It Works

What’s attached and where

When Link My Books posts new settlements to QuickBooks:

  • Audit files

    • An audit file is attached to the corresponding journal entry in QuickBooks.

    • The file name follows the pattern:
      audit-{settlement-ID}.csv

  • MTD daily summary files

    • MTD daily summary files are extracted and attached to the related invoices during posting.

File size and format

  • Files are attached to QuickBooks up to QuickBooks Online’s attachment limit of 20MB.

  • If a file is over 20MB, the settlement or invoice is still posted as normal, but the attachment is skipped.

    • There is no need to repost; the transaction itself is unaffected.

  • The system automatically handles the correct file format and attachment behaviour for QuickBooks; you don’t need to change any settings in Link My Books.

When this applies

  • Attachments are added for settlements posted from 17 February 2026 onwards.

  • Older settlements are not updated automatically and will not gain attachments retroactively.

Customer Impact

For QuickBooks users

  • No more separate downloads from Link My Books

    • You no longer need to download audit files from the Link My Books dashboard just to attach them manually into QuickBooks.

  • Everything in one place in QuickBooks

    • Audit files now appear directly on the relevant journal entry.

    • MTD summary files are attached to the related invoices, keeping your documentation close to the underlying transactions.

  • Improved MTD and audit readiness

    • MTD-related documentation is easier to find and share with your accountant or HMRC (if requested), as it’s stored alongside the transactions in QuickBooks.

  • Feature parity with Xero

    • QuickBooks users now enjoy similar automatic attachment behaviour to Xero users when it comes to audit and MTD files.

Notes for Existing Users

  • There’s nothing you need to enable: this behaviour is automatic for eligible (new) settlements.

  • If you’re reviewing older data:

    • Pre–17 February 2026 settlements will not have these files attached in QuickBooks.

    • You can still use your existing Link My Books workflows and downloads for historical periods if needed.
