Written by Ruth Buan
Updated this week

Applies to error messages:

  • Xero API Error

  • API Rate Limit

  • Method Lock

  • Token Refresh In Progress

  • cURL Error

  • "An unhandled error with the Xero API"

  • "The API returned a non-successful status code that is not recognised"

What this error means

This error appears when Link My Books tries to send a settlement to Xero, but Xero temporarily rejects the request due to an API issue.

These errors typically occur when Xero is experiencing a temporary service issue or when the system receives too many requests in a short period of time.

Why this happens

Common reasons include:

  • Xero’s API is temporarily unavailable

  • Xero is rate limiting requests

  • A temporary authentication issue occurred

  • The connection between Link My Books and Xero timed out

These errors usually resolve automatically once the Xero service stabilises.

How to resolve it

In most cases, you simply need to wait a few minutes and try again.

Steps:

  • Wait 10–15 minutes

  • Return to your Settlements dashboard in Link My Books

  • Send the settlement again

Most of the time, the settlement will send successfully on the next attempt.

When to contact Link My Books support

Contact Link My Books support if:

  • the error continues after multiple attempts

  • the issue affects several settlements

  • you continue to see the error after reconnecting your Xero account

Please include:

  • the exact error message

  • the events or steps that led to the error

  • a screenshot if possible

This helps our team check whether the issue is related to the Xero API or something specific to the settlement.
